Anyone notice the vin !! ..." VIN: 66382000982 "... NO 'B' !!

That was how my car was titled when I bought it a few years ago..
It was a big problem for me because even though the car had passed through at least 3 states like that, I was about to bring it into Canada !
I talked to Norm Miller at the time and he said he'd seen that before where a dealer would 'drop' the letter and substitute the year of the car on the paperwork...!
I had to have the P.O. trailer the car half way across Texas to a 'stolen car specialist' at the DMV and have him inspect the car to declare that there must have been a 'clerical error' in the past and they re-issued a new title with the 'B' instead of 66 !!

I'm not doubting the the vin 'tag' on the car starts with 'B382...' , I'm just commenting on the vin in the ad which states '66382...' I'm assuming that it was quoted from the title as like I said.. a few cars were titled with that error back in the day

My car has SUN659470661 as the vin # on the registration but has a vin plate with B9470661LRXFE. I was going to change it when I registered it but dealing with the CA DMV is not something I want to do unless I have to. I always wondered why they did that.

Good thinking, I have a friend that is a Sheriff and he said he has seen cars impounded for vin discrepancies before, it's get long and expensive to correct, sometimes ending up with a state issued vin#.

One trip

To the CHP where they sort the cobbled salvage cars from the ones that are well lets say unfortunate or dropped by the DMV system, there by requiring a inspection. They are most interested in catching chop shops and those who are reattaching EPA FMVSS std. plates and the occasional import that they have not seen and somehow avoided the radar and ended up in USA without being made for the US market and the US standards.
The kept a domestic version bike of mine for 2 weeks, a Honda S90, they did not know they did not put a number on the engine.
Pre 1967 cars and bikes did not match engine number to vin in California. Then VW's were being stolen for the motors here in LA as fast as you could blow them up.... well almost.

About 10 years ago I had a car from another state, with questionable paperwork, and no way to prove the VIN was real. The DMV told me all I had to do was go to a bonding co., get a bond for the amount of its worth and they would register it. The purpose of the bond was if someone claimed it was their car there would be money to pay them off. Thats what I did. Fortunatly the car was just a $1000 Chevy, and thats what the bond cost. Bottom line I didnt have to change any vin numbers, just PAY.
