Pinch Spot Welds Are Used

Gilles,

I looked at my Mk II's fan shroud. I cannot say for certain that it is original, since the car was involved in an accident shortly after I got it in 1970. They might have had to replace the shroud at that time. In 1970, Rootes replacement parts were readily available, so I have no doubt that the shroud is an original Rootes part.

Most of the shroud is made from a single piece. Attached to this are three other parts that are used to attach the shroud to the car. At the top of the shroud is a piece that is "L" shaped. It is attached to the main part of the shroud by pinch spot welds. Nearer the bottom of the shroud are the two "legs" that are used to bolt the shroud to either side of the radiator. Both of these also are attached to the main body of the shroud by pinch spot welds.

Hope this helps.

Just checked my fan shroud (mk1 and off the car at the moment) and it is definitely made from one piece of steel apart from the 3 small pieces that David mentions.

I assume the radiator was the same part all through the Tiger's production so would have thought that the shroud remained the same too.

Rootes were watching the pennies so if they didn't need to change it, I can't see them doing so.

Mk II Radiator Was Different

The Mk II radiator was different. It used a plastic drain valve which was located on the opposite side, if I recall correctly.

Hi Gilles

I have owned Mark 1's, Mk 1a and Mk2's and am 99.99% sure there was no difference in the fan shroud between them. My brother has had his Mk2 from new so will check next time I see it.

Hi Gilles

I just looked at my original Rootes Parts Manual which includes both the Mk1 and Mk 2, and it only shows one part number for the fan shroud.

Reasonanle facsimilie

Your fab guy left out a telltale crease along the back of the area that appears like a balloon tire bike fender. The crease is in aprox. 1/2'' along the motor side of the curvy part. In all fairness the U.K. ones I have seen also have the same missing element.

That's it

Sorry have not been able to provide pictures. The crease may have some variation in depth and from passenger side to driver's side. I suppose it could be mfg. change or latitude or restorer's discretion.
