Steel wheel
I have to agree with Gille, I also bought my Mkll in 1984, I have the non restored, argent silver colour spare in the trunk. I have never touched it, and it has always appeared as a spare would, not used much if any, and it fits under the trunk platform. It also has a 66 date code stamp. I have to think that when I purchased this car, there wasn't the need to find the original spare back in the day because it was just a neat used car, it just came with what it had. I also have another question concerning the spare. The tire I have is a Dunlop RS5 with very little wear and the nubs on the side wall still present. The spare does not have a white wall. I have also talked to other Mkll owners concerning this who have found the same. My restorer friend in the Pacific Northwest also agrees that in the waning days of Mkll production, the Chrysler bean counters saved money by not putting a white wall in the trunk as a spare. Not being old enough to have purchased one new, I would like to hear from the latter half of mkll production owners concerning these rim and tire issues.
