Non sulfur/non synthetic gear oil for top-loaders.
The debate over GL 4 vs GL 5 gear lube for top-loaders continues:

Sulfur additives are bad for yellow metals (sincro mesh rings). Slippery synthetics also defeat the blocking rings from slowing the gears to mesh easily.

The bottom line is that I'm looking for a case of non-sulfur/non synthetic 80-90 wt gear oil?

Any clues?

Randy penrite do a good toploader non sulfur non syn oil. Not sure if available statesife?

I believe was what was recommended by Cobra restorer Craig Connley AKA Paradise Wheels and maker of Paxton Supercharger s . He recently became a Tiger owner .
I'll check tomorrow but I'm 90% sure it is the transmission builder's choice.

An Interesting Comment

From A Fellow Member:
80/90 gear oil is equal viscosity to an SAE 50 engine oil. We used a 50 in all of our over the road truck transmissions for many years. We now use a synthetic 50 due to warranties of new equipment. There is no sulfur in engine oil but there is an extreme pressure additive. Alpine transmissions use an SAE 30 engine oil. :confused:

I spoke to Penrite in Aussie today, after lots of discusions, finally recommended Progear 75-W85 gear oil I have orded 5 liters

They Sell GL4 90 perfect for vintage car
