Default drive shaft angle

This has bugged me for as long as I've owned my car. Why wasn't the rear end made, so the drive shaft runs straight down the tunnel, instead of at the angle it does?

It was cheaper.

They got by using the same length axle on both right & left sides.

If they'd centered the diff, they would have needed two different lengths.
