Over the years I have thrown or given away over 6 sets of wheels--wish I would have kept at least one for me.... :(

Getting closer

My car, B9471713, arrived with the original steel rims (dated /64), without the strengthening ribs. If Alpine 260 has 1784 with ribs attached that suggests sometime in early 1965 the wheels were updated.

Cheers, Lance.

So nice added value to this thread, the 66 alpine/tiger steel wheels have modified lug holes and strengthen ribs. You could probable autocross these rims with a small added weld on the inside to each of the areas that weld the inner to the outer rim.

So far we have not found a special tiger rim for the pre 66 cars. I have posted a picture in my original post of a rim with a 5 stamp. This is probably correct for an early tiger until someone can show any specific difference. Lee

PS Michael has added value to this post too. When restoring a rim the actual fogging, angle of paint is a consideration. Top restored cars will be in line with the corvette guys, an "as built" restoration. Current restorations are at the level of a Tiger that roots never built. Now that the mk2s are in a value area that allows proper investment in the restoration collectors and judges can focus on different expectations for the restorations. Some day I hope to see an appropriate line of value for our cars: concourse restored "as original", restored beyond original, untouched original, modified, original, and driver quality. I don't want to start up a discussion of values in this post so lets just this is one person's opinion. Lee

Would 66 be the last version used on mklls also, or is it something different? Anybody with a stock original mkll know?

Mr55...I really think people should sign their posts.....My Mk1a is one of the last of the lot, then they built 500+ more cars. It would surprise me to find a 67 wheel although alpines continued for some time and date stamps were often changed with no improvement in the part. Good question though and someone with a correct mk2 can resolve this question with the pull of a hubcap. Lee

Thanks for the heads up Lee, I'm new to posting, I have some things to contribute after 30 plus years of ownership. I haven't seen a date stamp past 66. I really can't see the factory improving wheels from Alpine to Tiger, making tooling changes for a low production car from a company with financial issues. I agree with you about an owner of an original mkll checking to see if there is any difference. As long as were talking about paint for wheels, what is the correct silver for mkll steelies, is it argent silver?
Thank you for everyone's input. :)

Alpine association

My SV Alpine, (B395017170 produced 2nd week of Sept 67) has /67 dated, small lug hole, ribbed wheels. Alpine production continued until Jan 1968 by which time Rootes produced another 2000 ish examples.

If Mk II Tiger production ended in June 67 we can probably assume some /67 dated wheels found their way onto those cars in the funky new silver livery. Anyone care to pop a cap to confirm....?

Lance.

Well for what it's worth, here's my contribution.
This is a loose spare wheel that came with my '66, MK1a (550).

Cheers,

Paul

The "X" isn't actually an "X" as you'll see in one of the next photos, it's part of a diamond shaped logo.

These are from my spare tire, I believe it's original to my car, can't see the part number though.

Here is one rim from the set of four with caps and rings that also came with my car (it has vintage LAT 70's on it), based on what was posted looks like these are Alpine rims?

Cheers,

Paul

Since in the prior post is a correct 65 date wheel I am going to close this thread with a summary.

You can now easily put together a correct set of stock wheels for your Tiger without the need to find "tiger wheels". You will need to find correct date code rims before your car was built. If you have a early tiger you need the 65 wheels, if you have a later car you get to use the better 66 wheels and some of the late Mk2s need 67 dated wheels. If you don't really care about being correct, best to use 66 or later dated wheels because they are better. there are wheels dated 64 too for early cars.

This is correct

Paul you have it right. It's not just the date code. I have given away 8 to 10 steel wheels. I just got one with the lug nut stud thicker section . Boy I sure hope Tiger guys don't get as as OCD like the Porsche steel wheel guys. My pictures are attached. Most all the old Tiger stories I have read and say they are different focus mainly on the stud area.

For what it is worth my MKII built June 1967 as 66 Marking on it ,
Bought the car in 1984 .
May not be the original steel wheel .

Steel wheel

I have to agree with Gille, I also bought my Mkll in 1984, I have the non restored, argent silver colour spare in the trunk. I have never touched it, and it has always appeared as a spare would, not used much if any, and it fits under the trunk platform. It also has a 66 date code stamp. I have to think that when I purchased this car, there wasn't the need to find the original spare back in the day because it was just a neat used car, it just came with what it had. I also have another question concerning the spare. The tire I have is a Dunlop RS5 with very little wear and the nubs on the side wall still present. The spare does not have a white wall. I have also talked to other Mkll owners concerning this who have found the same. My restorer friend in the Pacific Northwest also agrees that in the waning days of Mkll production, the Chrysler bean counters saved money by not putting a white wall in the trunk as a spare. Not being old enough to have purchased one new, I would like to hear from the latter half of mkll production owners concerning these rim and tire issues.
