PITA

Outside of Ken's Tiger has anyone else installed the stainless steel exhaust from Sunbeam Specialties? Please contact me offline if you have.

I recently have done three installs using them. E-mail me , Warren, for comments.

Notes

Technically speaking the original mufflers were mild steel.
The stainless steel ones I'm talking about are the closest reasonable facsimile to the stock item.

I installed a complete set from SS.

Both main center pipes were less than perfect in that after doing all the bends (mostly up and down), they were not straight (side to side).

I checked both pipes on both sides and clearly one pipe fit on one side ok but the other pipe did not fit on either side.

I had to straighten (side to side) the pipe that did not fit on either side.

It's been over 2 years ago that I installed a set of Stainless exhaust. Thought I'd be able to "Plug and Play", but that was NOT the case. I soon ended up at my exhaust shop for a couple hundred dollars worth of "massaging" the pipes. I will say that I am very satisfied with the end result. My Concours MK l looks stock and sounds good. Vendor

I'm hoping that the vendor makes corrections and improvements the way Dan and Gary et al make CAT headers as they say in the marketing world new and improved.

Got Tiger ?

I'm hoping that the vendor makes corrections and improvements the way Dan and Gary et al make CAT headers as they say in the marketing world new and improved.

I'm curious if the vendor has a mock-up Tiger to work with and an experienced Tiger guy hangin' around to offer proper comment. Would like to see things move in an "improved" direction to benefit all.

Or is it pride :)
I understand that they have Tigers in Canada, the cars at least.

I wonder if Dan or Gary can comment on the status of the LAT option copy of the Ballenger side out headers.
I hate thinking that I should have gone to pep boys and get some of that muffler wrap and just wrapped up the holy mufflers because I just couldn't stand it anymore . It almost sounded like a 51 Chebby blappppp blappppp

Hey Warren

I did a little 'more' research for you but you'll have to have $$$ lol

First, I have no idea who makes the systems for Rick but they are US$525 plus looks like the down pipes are extra @ US$131 so total from SS is US$656.25 plus apparently and couple hun to 'tweak' them

Double S in the UK has them in an 8 piece set for US$940 which MAY be the 'home market' price with the 20% VAT in there! IF that's the case then the export price would be US$784 plus shipping

The 'Double S' fellow in Victoria that I'm quite sure gets them for Double S in the UK quoted US$840 plus shipping from there and has this on their website...

..."The Original and finest stainless steel Exhaust Maunfacturer in the South West of England, UK. Double 'S' Exhausts have been exporting quality stainless steel exhaust systems for performance and classic cars to Europe, Far East, Japan and the United States & Canada for over 25 years.
Double S makes from original patterns to ISO 9000 Standards, exhaust headers/manifolds, down pipes, intermediate pipes, mufflers, silencers, resonators and tail pipes to fit most European Classic Cars (foreign cars), in either standard build or large bore systems.
All of our systems are mandrel bent to ensure good gas flow through the systems."...

So... 'original patterns' sounds good but only the installer will know for sure :O

The system I bought from SS last year had Double S stickers on it, I assume it's from Victoria.

in either standard build or large bore systems.

I guess the "large bore" system for the Tiger never made it out of the Double S ranch.

Hmmm

If the PO hadn't hacked out the og mufflers and put in glass packs ....
I'd remove the whole mess and look to the old school muffler shop before they die on the vine like every radiator shop I've used.

Rarely part numbers are left standing on items. What a better way to be a reseller than obliterate the p/n and leave clients frustrated at the local AutoZone being looked at by the 17-year-old saying what you want brakes for your toaster oven.... :)

Thanks, for the replies and heads up on the system. The one local guy that has the SS installed to me needs a cut and fix as its prone to damage at every four inch tall speed bump. Sadly it's the best stock like repop being that mild steel is mostly special order and dinosaur specialists that are still out there fixing old cars use aluminized or SS only and most do do not have a manual pipe bender. Then there's the poor quality mild steel you may get IF you can replicate the stock system and it'll rust like the Queen Mary even tho it's not living in the ocean.

More Information, Please

I had one of those old fashioned muffler shops do a custom SS system form the headers back. Looks great, sounds great.

For the benefit of those thinking about a new stainless steel exhaust system, do you recall how long ago you had this work done and what the rough cost was?

Thanks!

Sure, it was in July, 2020. 2.5" pipe with a 2.25" pass through, cross over pipe just under trans. Designed with an easy disconnect at headers, and again just after the pass through so the rear can be removed. Chrome tips. $1600. Seemed high, but quality of work was excellent and it's one of the few items I farmed out on the restoration, so I treated myself.

Difference in cars

After a brief report from my buddies doing a 5 speed swap , I still believe one size should fit all. The SS stockish
exhaust is pretty darn quiet and likely would not have a blub with a crossover pipe. As installed this kit from SS took
considerable secret sauce dribbled on the top of the bolts with a recycled dogg med syringe and extension tube.
Since this looks to be the 2 time the down tubes were off and one had been replaced it was challenging. The end result is very close to not being blower than the X frame.

Oh and the neighbors like it better I'd bet.
