tell a 260 from 289?

I found an engine from a late 63 Galaxy in a wrecking yard:
C3AE-6015N
date code 3F26
3 frost plugs per side
5 bolt block

My Tiger 260 also has 3 frost plugs so how to tell from the outside if it is a 260 or 289?

Is the F in the date code for a 260 and a C for 289?

Search the vin

It's a 289 5 bolt according to the pages I look at Mustantek etc. Its not conclusive though look at https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/289-hi-po.519698/
3 is the year F is the month and 26 is the day.

I saw that jalopy link too and part of my confusion

289 heads say so under the valve cover, but even so it like my 260, have 289 heads retrofitted

There must be a way to tell from the outside?

being such a lead mine probably had both 2bbl and 4 bbl config's It was a common hop up for the 260 to add 289 heads on a 260. I had a 5K14M in a MK1A 260 that had the 289 heads. Odds are decent if you can read the build date it didn't get bored and decked but it's a crap shoot that a machine shop would do one and not the other.

I have a
c3AE-6015N
3F26 Date code the same as yours. In the lifter valley 289 is cast into the block.

63 galaxy 289

I got this in Las Vegas lat year. I saw the 63 galaxy that it came out of. It’s a 5-bolt 289.
