Paint codes

The following are original PPG paint codes for the Sunbeam Tiger. These may not come up with current mixing formulae when you go to a PPG jobber, but they will be able to call the PPG color library and give to a custom mixing formula. I was able to do this with code 100 Med. Blue and was very happy with the color I got.

I'll list the Rootes code first followed by the color and then the DuPont code.
1 Black 93005
8 Foam White 83745 This is the wheel color for Mk1/MK1a
19 Moonstone 84031
39 Carnival red 84016
53 Wedgewood blue 29018
58 Midnight blue 97365
76 Balmoral grey 97121
86 Forest Green 97191
92 Arctic white 97819
100 Mediterranean blue 97680
106 Commodore blue 98081
108 Polar white 98083
109 Orchid green 98084

If I've missed any, let me know and I'll look them too!

Do you have a code for #192, Gunmetal metallic? It is listed as a late color, although I have never seen one

I went and had a look on line. The only reference I can find to a "gunmetal metallic" would have been Rootes code 130 and was not introduced until 1970. I wasn't able to find ANY Rootes/Chrysler paint code above the mid 150's range

The following metallic grey/silver colors were available in 1967 although I don't think these were available on the Alpine or Tiger (maybe special orders)

82 Silver grey 97829
89 Burnt almond 97830

other Rootes metallics greys/silvers that predate 1967 were

9/10 metallic gray/Gray metallic 83766
56 Medium steel gray 96749

Just checked the possible Tiger paint codes on line. 130 is the color code you are interested in. There is no 192. The highest was 174 (tangerine). The Berger/ICI paint code for Gunmetal metallic is 404.3504. You might be able to have someone cross that to PPG or Sikkens.

MK2 sales brochure showing available colors of Commodore blue, Carnival red, Polar white, Orchid green, Mediterranean blue, and British racing green. All interiors black with the exception of Polar white which could have been ordered with red interior.

Thanks for all your effort. I had gotten the 192 from the paint code listing from the Tech Data from the SAOCA website. It is listed as being usedg on late Alpines with New Red upholstery. I found another reference with the 130 number. I'll try the cross reference, and the other grey listings. Sounds like a nice combination.

The gunmetal was on a few SV but was used on other post '66 rootes saloons iirc. Sort of a mid-dark grey with a slight metallic in it.
I think ian and jan had found a sv with it.
There are a few oddball Alpines that have VINS with non stock rootes paint codes and still wear that colour.
I would assume knowing ian that the gunmetal listing and the calypso red interior would have been direct from his brochure collection

Why I would ask is the BRG a name slapped on the IMHO Forest Green 86.
I've seen ledger pages with BRG but thought it was another human error.

I think you'll find the Forest Green to be a different shade than BRG. Doug and Mitchell spent a lot of time coming up with a formula that matched original painted parts that they had. I know of two Alpines and a Tiger that were painted using their formula. Set these cars next to a BMC car that's BRG and you'll see the difference.

As I recall, some of the Rootes brochures for the Tigers called their green Forest Green and other brochures called it British Racing Green. But you are right, a BMC BRG car looks like a slightly different color than a Rootes BRG/Forest Green.

Rootes later in production changed the name of code 86 from forrest green to " BRG" as discussed often the rootes colours seemed a little " muddier" than some other marques.

The rootes 86 is certainly not the darker green usually associated with BRG

How often do you pull into a British show and find a Forest Green Sunbeam? It doesn't happen too often. Regardless of what people say about the color, I liked a green car when I started driving it in the 60's and I still like it today. It will be at a show in S. Carolina next month if anyone wants to see the color Doug came up with. If anyone wants to see the untouched original paint bulk head to dash brackets that were painted by Pressed Steel when they built the car you're welcome to take a look.

It's all about the rods and cones in your eyeballs. Find and early high dollar correct E type. I've only had a resprayed 86 car but had a couple of heater core / hood latch tray's :)
