Fire extinguishers

I understand that halon in the gas form was outlawed, but it seems that there is halon 1211 (or halatron) that is a nitrogen cooled liquid form of the gas that evaporates very fast and leave no residue.

I see several makers of the halon 1211 and halatron. Any recommendations about how good the newer halon is, the different manufactures (halguard, kiddie etc) and the appropriate size to carry - 1.4 lbs, 2.5 lbs, or 5 lbs (which seems quite large). I see JEGs has some nice looking units....

I cannot reccomend a certain type over another but I carry a 2.5lb extinguisher in my car and the size is perfect.

CO2

What about the time tested CO2? seen any of them for sale. According to Hollywood they will even work if the Blob revisits the LA area.

Kidding aside all I see in the retail home improvement stores are dry chemical. If you find some CO2's please let us know. I was in a extinguisher refill service company the other day and they had 0 for sale.

The world seems to be full of throw away single use items and fire extinguishers have been in that category for years that cost 20 to buy new and 18 to re charge or re certify. I think CO2 ones must be hydro tested like your SCUBA tank due to their high pressure every 10 years adding to their cost.

AFFF

[my$.02]

I installed a AFFF system in my BMW. Something I will look into with the Tiger. Will have to see where I could mount without drilling holes.

AFFF

Aqueous Film-Forming Foams are based on combinations of fluoro-chemical surfactants, hydrocarbon surfactants, and solvents. These agents require a very low energy input to produce a high quality foam. Consequently, they can be applied through a wide variety of foam delivery systems. This versatility makes AFFF an obvious choice for airports, refineries, manufacturing plants, municipal fire departments, and any other operation involving the transportation, processing, or handling of flammable liquids.
6% AFFF Foam is a proven effective concentrated liquid designed to form a dense foam to extinguish class A or B fires and alcohol fires. This material will smother fires and prevent air from reaching the flammable materials and lower the heat of combustion by cooling action.

AFFF provides foam and penetrating action to smother and cool all class A fires.

On class B fires provides smothering action from the dense foam plus the ability to form an emulsion with oils and other hydrocarbons, creating a cool barrier interface that lowers the temperature of the oils and reduces the heat of combustion of flashing action of the material.

Cleanup requires flushing with water.

AFFF is environmentally safe.

For the less intrusive. Remember; you have to stop, get the hood open and then use extinguisher.....lots of time lost.
Halon, Halotron and AFFF hand held extinguishers -

Halotron -
Halotron I is a "clean agent" HydroChloroFluoroCarbon discharged as a rapidly evaporating liquid which leaves no residue. It effectively extinguishes Class A and B fires by cooling and smothering and it will not conduct electricity back to the operator. Halotron is pressurized with Argon gas and is an EPA approved HCFC blend agent approved on Class A, B and C fires. It has a low GWP of 0.04 - 0.24, low ODP of 0.014 (twelve times lower than the EPA maximum allowable ODP of 0.20) and low Atmospheric Lifetime (3 1/2 to 11 years). Halotron is intended for use in areas formerly protected by Halon 1211 hand portable extinguishers such as computer rooms, telecommunications facilities, clean rooms, data storage areas, offices (for protection of sensitive electronic equipment), boats and vehicles.

Firefighting foam agents suppress fire by separating the fuel from the air (oxygen). Depending on the type of foam system, this is done in several ways:

1) Foam blankets the fuel surface smothering the fire.

2) The fuel is cooled by the water content of the foam.

3) The foam blanket suppresses the release of flammable vapors that can mix with the air.

Halotron has a very low Ozone Depletion Potential.

I still have to find an appropriate place to empty the contents (very effective supresant.. and also very harmful to people) .. but is a nice option..
