I was working on a couple sets of hardtop side windows and noticed that the “PERSPEX” stamps on some are “A.S.4” and some have “M1AS-4”. One style is stamped to read on the stamped side and the other is reversed and stamped on the opposite side you would read.

I have to ask if anyone knows the history?

They are the original windows, and the rear window was also perspex

While we often say Perspex as a description for a clear polycarb it's actually the brand of the product from original company that made it... Much like saying a "biro" for a ball point pen... Or Hoover for a vacuum etc

Someone a whirl back acid etched the original perspective logo and specification marking onto their repro windows.

In my experience the earlier cars had the windows marked "AS-4" and later cars had the M1AS-4... I recently restored a couple early hardtops identified by the lack of the clip for attaching the rubber straps (AT70 from Sunbeam Specialties). Both tops had windows marked AS-4. I also restored a couple of Mk2 hardtops (large buttons for the qtr. window latches) and both had windows marked M1AS-4.

I do not know when the change was definitively made.

As a side note for folks working on replacing the side windows, The large buttons for the windows have been reproduced and are currently listed for sale on E Bay.

Rick,

Thanks for the info, but when I tried your link, eBay gave me an error page, saying that the page could not be found. Maybe the listing expired.
Strange. I just copied their listing data. The listing has not expired. The eBay item number is 375641842172. Trying searching that number in the eBay search bar.
