Headers advice

I am new to the forum but a long time CAT member. Recent events have left me in a position to update my Tiger that I first restored in the early 90's and was my daily driver for about a decade. My question is, what recommendations would forum members have for headers ? Club, Sunbeam Specialties, or other ? I have had the old club headers with the "s" bend and the cut outs since the late 80's and they have done well, but if I am going to do a complete restore I think I should upgrade the headers as well. I am concerned about fit first and performance second. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

New club headers HIGHLY recommended. You can even use the small spin on filter with them.

Mine are Jet-Hot coated....add another $260 or so to the bill.

I also fit the club headers with the engine in place. A bit fiddly, but no bending necessary! I had to jack the engine up, but they fit. My engine's not as pretty as Duke's, but it has the oil filter mounted on the block and the headers fit fine.

Back in the 80's I had Sanderson headers, they were a good fit but I don't think they make them anymore.

Standards?

Mine by the way are middling.

"Complete Restore" is a wide range of possibilities?

The older style of CAT header has 1/2 inch primary tubes with (as you said) the daily exhaust from the side of a "cut out" capped collector. Relative to newest production the tubes are 5/8 and the collector is oriented to allow the muffled exhaust to connect inline.

How will you use the Tiger? What standard are you restoring to? I run old style CAT Headers on Black Tiger a hopped up 260 and the later (not latest) CAT Headers on TigerBlue running open track events with a 302 and more than an HP per cubic inch. I consider both perfect for the application and my expectations.

Sooo... If max performance is not the goal? And the old headers are serviceable? Recycle old or buy new? Your choice.

I just got a quote from Jet-Hot for Extreme 1300 polished, which appears to be what you have. How long ago were yours done? My quote was significantly higher - $355 including return shipping.

Nice engine, BTW.

Regards,
John.

Let me check the receipt and I will let you know.

I tell you what though, they got damaged on the engine dyno with the coating turning gray at all of the 90 coming out of the cylinders. I sent them back (do not tell them that they were on a engine dyno) and they not only recoated them for free but paid shipping both ways.

Thanks!

Super

Looks great on the stand!

Having seen several guys cars that really are in the know that have beat and cuss marks and dents on their fresh jet hot coating making 8 lbs of motor 1 pound of headers fit into 8 lbs of engine compartment would really be helpful.

I am sure it is much more than if it don't fit spit. More like lots of beer and just be able to walk away and not get fustrated.

Contact CAT parts depot as I recall they are on a next gen latest and greatest as of the last meeting.

The bright silver finishes will tend to turn gray after the motor runs awhile.
I went to black for that reason.....also...make sure you get them coated on the inside as well .

Barry Greenberg worked on my car around that time as well. Can't forget that waxed up handlebar mustache. Barry was CAT Pres. for a few years. Scott Osborn worked for Barry and has had a shop in Hermosa / Redondo Bch. area on PCH for many years. Has high AAA approval. He went thru my Tiger when I put it back on the road 10 years or so ago.

Barry built the 302 that's in my Tiger back in the 80's...I found him a few years ago somewhere back east...Kentucky, maybe?

Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum and just recently purchased an all original MK-!A 1965. Where can I purchase the headers you show. They are beautiful.

Headers

I am in the process of rebuilding my MK1A and exhaust headers are trash so I need to get new ones either coated or uncoated as shown in the pictures.

Does anyone know wee I can get these?

John

More info

As I heard it, the latest will be the greatest. No fellas this is not some new and improved Tide with some new cleaning power.

We got one of the biggest names in the Tiger world tweaking the product.

How many sellers stick behind their product like CAT I can think of two but I am a little prejudiced on number two:cool:
