I need a good, stock axle shaft for my Mk1. I live near Los Angeles. Or, does anyone know of a nearby machine shop that can do thread repair on an axle shaft? It will require welding to build up the threaded end of the shaft. Thanks.

Sometimes you can “chase” the threads with a 7/8” fine thread die. Other than that , most any machine shop can start a thread cut by following from the bottom out. If welding build up, make note of the 1/4” woodruff location and pin hole.

I have not personally seen the damaged axle shaft, but the damage was described to me as a mushroomed end, due to someone having beaten on the axle to remove the hub and then a grinder was taken to it to remove enough of the end threads to get the nut started back on the axle. The threads that are left only extend half way into the nut, not safe. So, welding the axle and re-cutting the threads is my only option, unless someone has an axle needing a new home on my Tiger. The shop I took my rear end to is well regarded and was recommended to me by a couple people on this forum. The problem is that the shop that he takes axles to be repaired can't do the repair because the machine they use is broken and awaiting parts. It's already been a month for a 2 day gear swap job. Thank you for telling me about the woodruff and pin hole. I presume that the professionals involved would know to note the location of the woodruff and pin hole, but I will be sure to pass that information along to the shop re-gearing my diff.

I was told that the shop, where my axle shaft was sent, has repaired the machine they need to do the repair and that the repair should be completed early next week. I want to thank everyone who chimed in with help and/or advice.

That is good news. If you are happy with the repairs, it would be nice to let the Forum members know the name of the shop which repaired your axle shaft, in case someone else needs similar work. Thanks!

J&S Gear in Huntington Beach, CA is doing the ring and pinion swap. They sent the axle shaft out to be repaired. When I pick up my rear end, I'll ask for the name of the machine shop they used for the repair and post it here.

Sorry it took so long to get back to this, but I didn't have a great experience with J&S Gear and I wanted time to reflect on it before writing something I might come to regret. If anyone is thinking of using them and wants to know why I was unhappy, you can contact me and I will be happy to explain it in detail. Anyway, when I picked up my rear end, the owner was out of town. One of his employees told me that my damaged axle shaft was repaired in house at their shop. He said that usually they send axles out to Cook's Machine Works in Los Angeles (323)268-6571 because it is more cost effective. When I Googled Cook's Machine Works, a Motor Trend article showed up in the search. The article was highly complimentary of Cook's.
