Having worked out that my fuel gauge is reading low secondary to a faulty sender I need to replace this . Can I do this without removing the relevant trunk spring and if not what is the easiest and safest way to remove the spring - Karl

You shouldn't have to remove the springs ..
If you do, a sturdy strap around the spring end and pull it back . Don't put them back on too many holes in.. bets the boot just gently pops open not springs up too far...the springs are one of the reasons the boot panel gets warped

I found an easy way of removing the trunk springs is a nylon rope, tying to the spring hook and the other end to the upper end of a broom handle. Put a thick piece of cloth on top of your valence by the corner of your trunk opening and put the end of the broom handle down to the cloth cushioned valence top. Pull back on the broom handle and redirect the spring hook away from the anchor point. There you have it. To re-attach, the same in reverse. My Dad was a fisherman and he had both out in minutes. He always had a different way than I thought of. I sure miss him.

By far the easiest way to remove the spring is to release the trunk stay mechanism from the trunk lid. You can then rotate it (the stay mechanism) and the spring will fall right off. The other side will have enough tension to hold the trunk open if it was properly installed. If you have any doubts, you can always wrap the hinge portion with masking tape.
