Anyone know where I can get a new windshield & rubber seal, my original is has got a lot of scars. I'd be happy with just a new seal, but everyone who has looked at my windshield has said that it would behoove me to try to find a new one. Thanks....

S.S.

Sunbeam Specialties but a crate and shipping from Cali. costs incurred. Cobrakidz will soon chime in about his fun with was it Victoria British?.
I need one too, and keep hoping I'll come upon a nice roller parts car with one.

I can't comment on the VB windshield that I bought ( on sale ) because my $#@& glass shop broke it while storing it. Can't say I've heard good things though. The shop ended up paying for one of the Triplex (made in England ) ones same as Rick stocks... fit real nice. I DID originally get a new seal from VB also and it looked pathetic... just a loop of rubber :( so I got a proper one from Rick at SS and it was moulded nicely for shape in the corners and had no issue at all with the install
So..in these parts,( northwest ) the local guy could get the quality piece that Rick sells... but they ended up paying about 50% MORE than having it shipped from Rick !!

I'll tell you--the VB windshield was too big--the glass shop had to shave off over a 1/4 inch off the entire top to fit in the frame. I thought maybe it was my frame so a friend let me use his frame--still too big. I sent mine to the glass shop to be modified, ugh. First one broke BUT they bought another one for me--same fitment problem. Luckily the 2nd one went well and it now fits.
But it was cheap !!!!! :)
Warren--I have a decent one here-I could have brought it to the meeting with your doors......

another thing to watch on the new glass is the thickness... many of the new ones are not as thick as the originals. We had some made down under to the original spec about 2 years back, much better fit.

Current price @ Victoria British is $129.95 but I've seen winter sales @ about $110 which is I think what I paid... but if it don't fit...
Sunbeam Specialties is $295... $30 more for tinted green

windshields

we have used two of the late windshields from VB and have had no problems. we also used one of their windshields for a series 2 alpine which is different from tigers and later alpines. the box they ship in protects the windshield really well. they made it off the brown truck unbroken. the first late style that doug installed for me fit right as did the second one. the first one was installed a few months prior to suni in 09. we saw no difference in size or thickness. we do use rick's seal.

Windshield

I bought 2 windshields from VB when they were on sale at Christmas, I think they were about $100 a piece and the shipping wasn't bad, either, they both got here in good condition, glass quality looks acceptable, and the one I installed in B0471705 fit fine. Kept the second in the box as a good luck charm since I've found I never break anything I have a spare part for. I will agree about the VB rubber, just a loop glued up from straight stock, fit like crap around the corners, buy one from SS.

So, what I am hearing is that you can take your chances with VB (I have never ordered anything form them before) or just get a better one with the correct seal from Rick?

What's the deal with the green tint that someone mentioned that Rick offers? More like a modern car, were Tiger's original glass tinted?

thanks....

I would definitely get the seal from Rick... from the latest posts you may be OK with the VB windshield...
I don't know why Rick sells a tinted one but his listing for window glass shows ONLY green...

Clear

My stock screen is clear. Is the crap shoot that V.B. and its lower price worth it to you?

My first preference is always to support the best person or company service and initial quality and less trouble is King.

Cobrakidz mentioned a windshield buffing restoration method, but IDK how that works and if it is simply a plastic headlight repackaged reinvented buffing wheel and compound.

We have a Glass guy in town the fella that mfg.s the hardtop glass and as he is a Tiger guy who has been in biz many years I plan on asking him his lifetime sage advice. He also makes high dollar Lambo etc. and clear glass for Hollywood cars they must film thru in clear. Who likes their actress with a green cast on he face?

The Orion slave girl from Star Trek comes to mind...

Windshield tint and frame to body seal

I have what I believe to be original glass. It has small bubbles / delamination along the edges and a very small chip (dead center of course). I see the glass as clear, but need to check against the wings (definitely original). It is possible the laminate has a slight green tint to it.

In having removed the frame in its entirety and all the brittle hardened seals, a few questions have come up, which this thread and some earlier helped to answer. However, here's one I could not find.

The frame to body seal had a putty which I believe to be window glaze (mastic) located under the seal (in the frame open area) and a bead of window glaze 'tape' with a horizontal rectangular '8' shape type of cross section on top of (i.e. between seal and body) center to the seal. When I asked Rick about the glaze, he showed me a tube of caulk as replacement. I'm a bit hesitant on that as the glaze bead certainly has body (weight, thickness and structure) to it, perhaps allowing stronger set to the body after tightening the bolts down. Yes, I also have the original rubber wedges under the corner bolts, they were a bit surrounded by this glaze.

So... what y'all using there? I'll dig up some pics...

Ummm, she's hot.

IIRC the club had some screens made and came from So. Africa back in the mid 80's? Weren't all the best quality but all that was available back in the day prior to searching the Web. I believe I have one of those replacements and it has small bubbles along the edges and tinted along the upper edge.

If you're trying to verify originality or a replacement as I noted above there is a circular seal bottom center of screen. Inside the circle there is a solid triangle with two lines running right and left making it appear to be a stylized S. Below the triangle is:
SAFEVUE
LAMINATED
HPR DOT 122
AS1M34

Windscreen logo and tint

Some pictures of the windscreen / windshield as removed from the frame.

Few notes along with the pictures.

- The logo does not appear to 100% match X's description. However, it has some similar characteristics. Would expect that in a replacement I suppose. I read the following...

TRIPLEX
( XX )
( X )
LAMINATED
WF M3
AGREE'
T.P.G.S.6
[Triangle as described by X, point down, with S interior; having two humps on the top flat part. They look like boobies. ;-0 ]
ICM 0804 [triangle] S.P.(?)

Google ain't helping much...

- As viewed in TiMom.jpg. Original screen definitely looks to have a subtle green blue hue to it. Although the picture is no doubt faded a bit, to my eyes it looks very slightly darker than surrounding glass.

- Glass that I removed may or may not be the same as seen above in pic. Tint also seems very very subtle, and against white box has slight tint.

- Chip is an impact pressure relief inside the laminate. So... I can't have someone fill it. bummer.

- Bubbles around perimeter indicate some delamination, but I can't find gaps between layers.

Also took a peek at SS glass yesterday. The tinted screen is a very subtle green blue across the entirety and is not a darker bar along top.

So I'll have a choice to stay "older, probably period-ish, but maybe not original" or go new. If the chip right in the middle weren't there, no question I'd go ahead and use this glass. argh.

My logo was triangle apex up. Yours looks like a heart or a couple of wiper sweeps. Either stylized S's could be roadway into distance yours between hills beyond. Minor importance just observations.

My windscreen also has tiny bubbles along edges in a couple locations but came that way new. So maybe not in the process of delamination but a poor lamination job to begin with?

Derek--your car was a beauty back in the day...love the vintage photos. I would love to come see the progress one of these days.

Advice and tips always welcome

as are extra hands on site. Come on West Bruce.

I've actually thought about putting it on the trailer down to Warren's (ney, CAT's) fix-in meeting...

As in... "here you go guys... let's put it back together?..." lol

With 12 of us around one car, I'm not sure we'd either have it all back together, or perhaps we'd go the other way.

Overhaulin' CATmbr style...

"You know Derek, you really ought to just remove this and this and this... and do it 'right'..."

PS: Let the record state, my target is to have Ti at Monterey. I think it's feasible, but...I thought lots of things were easier only to have confidence >>> ability.

RE: Vintage photos. Will be digging up more of those. I've actually traced the dealer and location, would be really cool to find a plate surround. the locations still there as a used car lot. Have some interesting paperwork too, unfortunately lots lost.

RE: Windscreen. Thanks X. Hmm... Maybe it is a keeper. Kind of hate the idea of trying to store it without using it anyway... Worst case it breaks apart and I start from scratch again with new.

Shoot me the name of the dealer--I was at a swap meet today in Sacramento and went through the license plate guys frame stash, I'll keep an eye out for you..

I already recieved my glass rubber from SS as everyone agreed was the best & I picked up a new windshield over the weekend, just three hours away, so I guess I am all set. As for the install, another Tiger owner said he'd help me. I was surprised to hear that the windshield frame does not have to be removed from the car if the frame to body seal is still pliable. While the glass seal is totally destroyed after bing replaced 36 years ago, the body seal is like new. Weird...

Another possible supplier...

Message Body:

Hi,

A few years back you helped me with a windshield for a '65 356C Porsche that I was restoring. It was a perfect fit at a reasonable price.

I am wondering if you can do the same for me for the following car: a 1965 Mark 1 Sunbeam Tiger. It would be the same windshield used for a 1965 Sunbeam Alpine. I would pick it up at your Columbus, Ohio center.

Thank you,

Bill Waite
