Drums contacting backing plate & wheel cylinders

I'm working on a '65 Tiger and the drums (dunno where they came from) contact the backing plate on that inside lip, we turned them down for clearance (.020 or so) and they also make contact with the wheel cylinder boot and boot retainer. Its just enough to unseat the boot and push it back, not binding etc but there is contact.
Anybody else have this problem?
What to do, get more drums?, cut the boot off?, both? ignore? other?
Thanks, Oj

Never mind, I just checked the axle freeplay and am guessing 3/8ths is too much?
We are coming in behind somebody else on this project and I never thought to check axle freeplay, how can somebody do stuff this. why go thru the effort of putting it all back together down to new cotter pin in hub nut when its' all wrong?
Well, at least we'll all get a chuckle out of it.

3/8" freeplay !!

That much freeplay would indicate something really, really wrong with the assembly. Wrong bearing race perhaps?? Start from the middle and carefully work your way out. 2 cents
