FWIW, I drove mine with a close ratio for many years, even four years in San Francisco hills.
The conventional wisdom was usually in favor of the wide. I even bought all the parts to swap in the wide ratios.
Then, each time I'd drive someone else's car with a wide ratio trans, I'd say to myself, "Damn those close ratios are just so much sweeter running up through the gears."
