Were the original hubcaps painted red on the back side? All the ones I have are, and if so is there a reason?

the NOS caps that I have are painted red as are all the used ones I have. I always thought it to be some kind of a primer/sealer.

ok, thanks. I thought maybe someone had painted them long ago but as I turned every one over they all looked the same. Maybe they are off a red car.

its the red primer to deal the back of them... they are not ally so if left exposed would just rust out from the inside through to the outer chrome.

I wonder if they were dipped before plating. the finish doesn't look to be sprayed.
