Slow heat with gun, then let it stayed clamped a couple days. It kept shape, applying lid and some more heat. Looks promising so far.

Several days past .. so curious if the filter is still holding the 'new' oval shape? How long did you keep it clamped?

Couple lessons learned. It helps if the inside filter element seam is at one of the ends of housing, see picture. The shape does return a little, see picture(prior to mesh removal) I heated up the inner mesh and rolled it off, see picture. This was the best mod as it allows the filter to flex easier. All in all I had to use the top and bottom housing as a sandwich and work element in place. Once it is mounted on carb it should stay. Unfortunately I am about a year away from live testing it on my 65. Hope this helps until SS can get more in. Joe

Is there a need for the metal mesh ?
The silicone will form the seal for the top and base plates and the housing only needs to be tightened to the point of contact.. the paper element will hold its vertical dimension.. might be easier to remove all the metal mesh inside and out... Will look nicer with out the mesh too

Back in the days when engines were equipped with a carburetor you'll find that the air filter was designed to surround the carburetor and pull air from all directions instead of moving the air thru a much smaller designated area which can be seen when looking at any air filter for todays vehicles. Size and shape of todays filters will vary and you won't find the wire used in the filter shown. The metal frame was used to retain the filter shape for a designated use. We carry several brands of filters and many of these older style filters have been dropped out of supplier inventories. Bottom line is retaining shape is the reason for the metal. The size of the openings will show that it's not intended to filter. As Michael mentioned, the removal of the metal will not make a difference in filtering.

The quest continues…I searched and found a filter locally today that was on the shelf at Advanced Auto Parts for under $25. The inner mesh is only needed to be removed to fit housing. Heat gun helps, but not needed. Hope to have a better DIY instructions to come.

In my search I found this K&N knock off for those that want a reusable high-flow filter. This one is ready right out of the box. Very tight fit that requires tucking it into the housing, like sealing a new Tupperware container. $26 on eBay delivered

Here is a photo of the air filter I just got from Rick at SS which was made by S&B. It fits perfectly. Cost is $49.50.
