Back in the days when engines were equipped with a carburetor you'll find that the air filter was designed to surround the carburetor and pull air from all directions instead of moving the air thru a much smaller designated area which can be seen when looking at any air filter for todays vehicles. Size and shape of todays filters will vary and you won't find the wire used in the filter shown. The metal frame was used to retain the filter shape for a designated use. We carry several brands of filters and many of these older style filters have been dropped out of supplier inventories. Bottom line is retaining shape is the reason for the metal. The size of the openings will show that it's not intended to filter. As Michael mentioned, the removal of the metal will not make a difference in filtering. Is there a need for the metal mesh ?
The silicone will form the seal for the top and base plates and the housing only needs to be tightened to the point of contact.. the paper element will hold its vertical dimension.. might be easier to remove all the metal mesh inside and out... Will look nicer with out the mesh too
