Steering rack

Did anybody ever overhaul a steering rack ? Just started and found a broken Rack centering bush . Fortunately I had a brass replacement whch I bought from Ebay earlier. How to adjust the play ? Anything else I should pay attention on ?
How can I loosen the end locking plates ?

How can I loosen the end locking plates ?

There is a inner rod ball tool that helps pry off and another to re-crimp the lock domes. If the end play shims are tight, I leave them alone. If the domes are not recrimped correctly, they will not clear the castings tube and bind up. Make sure that the rack drive gear tensioner is clean and moves freely. The little access gaskets can be easily made from NAPA stock. Finally, a good set of bellows to keep the 70/90 wt oil in. I prefer the silicon bellows. Patience.
