Removed the stainless trim on the side of the car. Wanted to get to painting the inside of the trunk so decided to weld up the small trim holes that were accessible from inside the trunk so I could paint the back side at least.
Use a slick tool that has a magnet on one side and a copper backer on the other. Like a teeter-totter. This covers the back of the hole so the weld doesn't blow though.
Used some.30 0.030" [edited] wire and set the welder for 18 gauge. Did some practice on a scrap metal piece where I punched some similar sized holes. Filled up a bunch of holes in the trunk floor as well while I was at it.
Once confidence (well not totally) was high after practice I used a roloc sanding disc on the small Milwaukee angle die grinder to sand the patches clean on both inside and out, then finally hit the holes with a tiny file to remove any goop or paint.
Seemed to come out OK, need to finish it a bit flatter before painting the trunk, but came out OK.
Leaving the rest for the painter (some day...)
