Hi all,
Will this fit to a 5 bolt without much drama
Ford 4 speed Toploader Gearbox

very tight box with no sign of wear on gears or synchros,

25 spline. Tag has details HEH P 022891

extension housing has cast numbers RF C4DR-7A040A

The extension housing also has a lug on it that is a difference.

This is a 1964 mustang gearbox, wide ratio, that came out with the 289 Windsor. Comes with the correct bellhousing for mustang or falcon

Steven:

Your transmission will not directly fit. Tigers used the HEH-E and HEH-B versions, with a more compact layout. The tailhousing and corresponding tailshaft on yours are too long. If you don't mind rebuilding it, you can swap a few parts and make it fit:

1: The aforementioned tailhousing is only used in Tigers and 1964 Falcons (I think). Not many around, so you'll have to search. You might find one at David Kee Toploader or a similar specialist.

2: The aforementioned tailshaft has to go. Even if it was the correct length, the 25-spline is a known weakness. Ford upgraded these to 28-spline in 1965, and discontinued the 25-spline pieces. You can buy one of these from David Kee or maybe Toploader Heaven.

3: Because the Tiger tailhousing has the speedometer cable access on the left side, you will have to swap speedometer drive gears on the tailshaft. The proper one is the green one, again available at the aforementioned places. If you have an electrically-driven speedo, you can use a less expensive yellow gear, and calibrate accordingly. Either way, the gear yours comes with will likely be the wrong hand for left-side cable entry.

Unfortunately, replacing the tailshaft essentially requires complete disassembly of the entire transmission. This isn't particularly difficult, but may be more than you want to do. If it makes you feel any better, I just rebuilt one, and I had never touched one before. If you proceed, you may as well replace bearings and any worn synchros while you have it apart.

Also, there are some upgrade parts available, such as heavy-duty input and output shafts, bearings, etc. You can go nuts if you want to, and have deep enough pockets. If rebuilding isn't for you, by the time you pay someone to do this, you'd be better off buying another transmission. Parts cost, alone, may dissuade you. I just looked into rebuilding my close-ratio into a wide-ratio, but didn't want to spend $500+ for the parts. I lucked out and found someone with a WR willing to trade. Good luck.

Regards,
John.

Solution # 47-2/3: Get a normal re-build kit with the detailed instuctions and pretty pics. Then transfer the 1st thru 3rd gears and counter cluster from the 25 spline unit to your original tranny. There are two small hurdles that snag most people; fighting the fork retaining bolts and proper use of the homemade 1/2" X 8-5/8" PVC pipe "tool" for the needle bearings. A bit of patience wins. Count and orient the pieces.
