Greetings!

I've been a member of CAT for a number of years and recently completed the restoration of a '66 Mk-1A I've owned since 1968. Here's some of its story.

I bought the Tiger when I lived in Ohio where it served as a daily driver off and on until I moved to Colorado in 1975. There it sat as a lump next to my woodpile until 1984 when it was resurrected for vintage racing with RMVR. I built a hipo 289 for it and race prepped it close to what would have been SCCA B-Production back in the day. For a couple of years we had some good times running with the Cobras and GT-350s. Sadly, its racing career ended when the engine swallowed a valve and put a 2" section of camshaft thru the oil pan.

With a crate engine installed and engine compartment painted, it sat for a number of years with minimal use, but its environment had improved as it was now in a garage. One side was in primer, numerous small dents had been accumulated, and the original blue paint was in sad shape.

Over a period of years, and as the mood would hit me, I did what amounted to an inside-out restoration with no real end game in sight. Eventually, everything I could do was done, which left the ratty-looking body and a desire for completion.

Finding someone to do the body was difficult as the shops that would even consider the project wanted to do a total restoration. The car is not completely stock, it has had numerous rust repairs, and I was not interested in entering car shows with it. I simply wanted a clean, straight, shiny, blue Tiger I could take from the garage without embarrassment and enjoy driving. Last summer (2014) we found a shop that would provide what I wanted and by September my goals were achieved!

Unfortunately, the car was in the shop during SUNI and I was unable to get it down to Colorado Springs to have it authenticated. That will eventually happen and is my next goal.

Hey, Dale.
Your car looks great. Nice wheels too from what I can see of them.
Welcome aboard.

Hi Dale, I am in New Mexico not that far away. What color is the blue? Is it a midnight blue or did you go with a different color? My car will be painted in the future. Is it a non metallic or did you go with a base/clear coat? Nice to see your car. Cliff

Nice Job

It's good to see another mongrel critter still putterin' on the roads. ;)

Hi Cliff, interesting story on the color. When I did the engine compartment about 10 years ago I had the color code from the VIN plate "matched" and it turned out darker than original. I liked it, however, and decided to use it for the engine compartment and trunk. (To be honest, I never thought the original blue was all that great to begin with.) This summer, the shop that did the work said that code is long gone, a fact that was reaffirmed by some guys I met at SUNI, and even what I had used for the engine compartment was going to be tough to match. Since I just wanted a nice, dark, non-metalic, non-pearl blue, I let the shop have its way. The color they came up with is called "Valvoline Blue" and is the dark blue at the bottom of the "V" logo. Yes, the final finish was clear coated.

Under the hood I left a small section original. It's the area around the VIN plate where the two original spare keys are still located. The three blues are there for all to see and everyone so far likes the Valvoline blue.

Dale--beautiful car and a great story. I would love to see some pics of it back in it's race days, you have some good history there.

added some race pictures

I was asked to post a few race pictures from the days when I drove the car in RMVR events. Good idea! Our house was flooded in the 2013 Colorado floods and all our non-digital photos were either destroyed or damaged. We managed to save some Tiger pics and I've posted a few. Three are from Steamboat, CO in 1984, the other is form La Junta, CO the same year.

Thanks for posting. I very much enjoy reading about long-term Tiger owners and their cars.

Cliff: I'm in Pensacola, Fl but have a small, place in ABQ and am out often. Give me a ring or email. I'll catch up when I come out if you like. I have 5 Tigers. 4 running and one in the rebuild stage. David. 850-712-1200 or dhambrick147@yahoo.com. Happy New Year. Saw you had a little snow.

Nice looking car and history, Dale. I'm in Durango, CO and have a 66 MK 1A that should be done this summer. I'll post pictures and story when it's finished. I inherited it from my father-in-law in '98, who bought it from someone in Denver about 35 years ago. As a long ago multiple TR4 owner/ wrencher, this project has been slow, but the work environment much better- inside with funds! Hope to cross paths with you sometime.

Thank you, and I would like to have our paths cross. I have good friends in Durango and am overdue for a visit, so perhaps this spring. Many years ago in Ohio, I bought a basket-case TR4 I intended to build into a D-Prod SCCA car. I couldn't fund the project and sold it. I think the TR4 is one of thoise cars with timeless good looks. I wish you well with your Tiger and am looking forward to seeing pictures. Yes, indoors with funds is a big plus, and some free time helps too!

Yes, time is helpful, and in that department I'm still somewhat limited. But, I found a great source of help from Classic Coachworks' Chris Tamulonis over by Telluride- top notch guy, very reasonable, and super enthusiastic about the project. He does as much or little as I wish and doesn't even charge extra when I want to help!

To my eye, the TR4 is still the best looking British roadster out there, but the Tiger is rapidly gaining ground as my project nears completion. Look my up in the club roster if you ever head to Durango. Cheers- Andy Corra

Finding a shop like you've described can make all the difference. I basically shelved completing the body part for a long time because I couldn't find a shop that would do what I wanted. Last spring I found Midwest Auto Body in Longmont and they turned out to be the ideal place for me. They are also a shop that encourages owner intervention, and that was a big plus for me. I will look you up and you do likewise it you ever get up this way.

Will be hangin' out in Pagosa (Solitude Place) in a few months and will try & make contact. Life above 8000 feet makes us Nor'east curmudgeons ditzy.

Well then, you'll fit right in! My wife's family goes back 5 generations in Pagosa- great corner of the World. Do look us up.
