Wanted Trunk Platform

There was a trunk platform at the TEAE United in Oakville Ontario. Chris Lunn fabricates Sunbeam sheetmetal business card Britishmetal. Here’s his contact info.

That makes more sense Mike, Chris was just sheetmetal. Rick use to offer them at Sunbeam Specialties.

I asked Rick about the trunk platforms a month or two ago and he didn't have any and his supplier was no longer making them. I don't know if anything has changed.

An item that is very easily made out of plywood. Granted the material to cover it may not be the same By the time you add shipping you are looking at over $500 for a reproduction. Gives a person a sense of pride by making it yourself , does me anyway

Does Rick have the cover for the plywood? Copied one and ordered a cover for it from Rick but that was many years ago.

I made a couple using Baltic birch multi-layered plywood. Got some rugged Jag trunk liner material (comes jute padded) and had our interior guy bind all edges. Came out darned nice.

I am in the process of making two new trunk-platforms. I used an SS kit, which comes with 95% of what you need to to the job. ( maybe $160-$200? ) Call Rick. I bought a sheet of birch-cabinet grade plywood.( $60 ), Good for three platforms. I have 80 hours in this job so far, not an EZ thing to do. I got help from Travis C. and Mike M. in the Valley. Mike had original wood for me to copy. FYI Rick's/SS kit is not perfect--the vinyl material around the edge doesn't quite match the original wood, but you can make it work. If you bought one of these from Rick in the past for $500, consider yourself lucky.

More Photos: In the above photos, the post-it marks the the vinyl that does not come with Rick's kit. FYI, the original wood patterns will be at the CAT Parts Swap Meet, as I will be returning them to Mike M. there. (He might let you make a pattern copy on the spot before he takes them home.)

I talked with Rick. He is hopeful that he will have a new supplier for the trunk platforms, but there is no clear time frame. I had bought one from his previous supplier, and it is of good quality. Might try to make the exposed plywood look a bit older. Martha Wheat also may be able to supply the top covering.

No actually it's easy to sit as having a bout of arthritis. I have all but the Dzus fasteners as I recall I gave those away already.

Appreciate all the info, hopeing to find just an older beater piece. My car is not a show car and does not need anything pristiene.

Spoke to Rick at SS and he said he will no longer sell the Trunk Platform KIT. Hopes to sell the complete platform some day.
Steven
