I have talked about my wife's beater Tiger in the past--well here is a picture story to show the progress. This starts in the early 90's, a little paint and years of fun and then it left us...... we lost track of it in the late 90's, heard it was wrecked, and now it looks beautiful........

The way it looks now wish I had it back too--but we had fun with it and my wife put a ton of miles on it. My family had a paint shop so one day I pulled it in and painted it white--added the stripes awhile later. It had a 289 hipo and boy did it go--would blow my Tiger's little stock 289 away every time..... :(
Is the current color code 58? Sure is a pretty color , was it popular? My current car is a code 58. I know Lee just sold a 58 car and I have heard of a few others recently from Warren. Just curious......

Lighter

This one looks lighter but impossible to tell with differing OS on phones computers etc. I know a guy who just bought barn findish 58 as well and the pics of the missed by respray look rather metallic toned. I'll post a pic when he is ready to come out with it.

Hey what a scofflaw he repainted the lic. plate black:). If I did that I'd get pulled over and hauled off its called driving with an altered plate bad news especially after 2.5 beers

I'd say. Numbers and letters switched position with the State's plate color change. Should be letters first for black plates.

It's amazing how people around the country love the California black plates...I read ads from the Midwest and they often will say "comes with calif black plates".

Altered Plate?

Warren, What did he "alter" all he did is change background color from blue (70"s) to black (60"s) it"s the same plate?

Altered Plates

The California Vehicle Code does not allow altering of plates. Per the DMV web site,

"V C Section 4464 Altered License Plates

Altered License Plates

4464. A person shall not display upon a vehicle a license plate that is altered from its original markings.

Amended Sec. 2, Ch. 702, Stats. 2012. Effective January 1, 2013."

Changing the color (assuming the plate is the original blue, aluminum plate) is an alteration.

1-800-no-brainer

Holycat, It is not legal to have an aluminum licence plate on your car. (although you can buy a nice stamped one) You cannot sell a new stamped steel licence plate.(that is not legal to sell) I am sure many nice Calif. black plate cars have one aluminum plate. What would you do if you bought a nice 60's Documented car missing one licence plate? 1-800-no-brainer

Holy Moly

George if you paint a blue plate black it's altered. Old plates are steel 1st. thing a clerk does at DMV when looking to re activate plates for Y.O.M. program is to take a magnet and see if it sticks yellow black and Blue are made of steel.

Oh and yes I would rather pay 20 or 30 bucks for a repop plate if I could find one rather than pay 200 to 300 have my plates restored. I have spent a couple of hours getting my Y.O.M. plate to look as good as it does now. I do not care that my TAC cert shows a old plate number, I surrendered that old plate it was a nasty white 7 digit one.

Sorry. I drove this thread so far O/T. Dave

A good friend is a Lt with the Sheriff dept--he said his patrol deputies would never pull someone over for a painted plate as long as it comes back to that car AND it is a color offered in Calif.
back to the topic WARREN, is the color I believe to be 58 close to 58 in these pics?

Ok then,

Mr. Pot has decided to call Mr. Kettle black. You live in the back woods, here they look for reasons to hit on you.
Of course it was different when I was in my 30's and had long hair and a wooden bumper.

I have been pulled over going 37 in a 35 zone, as a follicle impaired type. They do w/e they want and look for a reason, I got a "just wanted to see if you have been drinking," I wouldn't bother paying to repaint a blue plate black.

I already said it looks lighter than 58. If this local guy gets this 58 car delivered I will snap a few pics. Somewhere either I read or heard 58 or 1 Embassy Black were the lowest production colors I think.

Point?

Not sure what point you are trying to make. In my earlier posting, I simply cited the MVC section that bans the altering of license plates. Knowing what the law says might be ONE factor a person considers when deciding whether or not to paint a blue plate black.

Here is California, we are required to display both a front and rear plate on our cars, yet every day we see cars without a front license plate. I doubt many ever get pulled over JUST for the lack of a front plate. As Warren stated, the police will use any legal excuse to pull over someone they are suspicious of and want to check out. The lack of a front plate or having an obviously blue series plate painted black would give them a legal excuse.
