FYI, Moss Motors sells the chrome cover for the map light. It cost $13.99 and is an exact replacement.

Iirc the sunbeams had a black finish that eventually comes off and reveals the shiney coating.
The lens and lamp were comon to jags amd lotus and iirc is a wipac or sparto product?

To clarify, the copper color was caused by me polishing the original cover. The new chrome cover from Moss has been installed.
I never saw a black cover.
I have a Lotus Europa which has the same light as a Jaguar, but it has a switch on the top of the light, not on the end like the Tiger. They were originally a Sparto product.

For whatever reason I have two Harringtons that use a map light like this that doesn't have a switch built into the unit. There's a two position switch for the panel lights with the second position turning on the map light along with the panel lights. Some MG's use a similar lamp with a switch in the center of the unit.

I checked the Alpine parts manual and it indicates that the Series 2 Alpine map light does not have a switch, but the Series 3 and up did come with a switch built into light fixture. But Harringtons are different critters. I wonder if there is a wiring diagram for Harringtons.

The early alpines (I/II) has the map light as part of the panel switch, The majority of Harringtons are series II based.

The answer to that question is no. I have a new wiring harness from a UK supplier in my right hand drive LeMans. It's identical to the left hand drive cars other than length differences of some wiring going to the instruments around the steering column . The LeMans has different rear light units versus a standard Alpine but they use the standard rear light wiring. The only wiring differences I know of on the LeMans versus a standard series 2 Alpine is that the LeMans has a dome light positioned just forward of the hatch opening. It's controlled by the switches that replace a door hinge bolt. On two of my LeMans I installed the GT lights that install over the rear view mirror base and it's wired into the dome light circuit. Both lights have switches that allow me to turn them on if the doors are not open. This photo shows the dome light. This is a painted unit but the one used in the LeMans was chromed.

Michael,
Did the Series I Alpine have a map light? When I looked at the Alpine parts manual, it lists only two map lights - Series II (1206115) and Series III and up (1206535).

Im away from my references. . but im quite sure the late SI did... A good check would be the dash diagrams in the owners manual or the period road test

I have to rely on others who are much more familiar with Alpines than I am. I do know there are errors of omission in the Tiger parts manual and I asked my question to see if this was an error in the Alpine parts manual.

Ill see if i canndig up the answer.. But its my recollection they had bthe map light.

I think the original part was gold anodized aluminum. This replacement looks like polished stainless or plated steel. I guess you could paint it gold or install as is. Mine fell off a while ago and got lost, so this part will be the replacement. It it pretty rigid so bending the tabs without hurting the plastic lamp could be a challenge. Thanks pfreen for finding this - I have been looking for a while. Another insert into Shop Notes perhaps.

I have thought the change was reflective of the gold to silver clock delete motif. There I go again applying logic to things that probably aren't...

I too thought it was a goldish.. but I have been assured that it was originally a very dark brown. By 1971 when I bought my 1964, it was already faded to goldish...
